In the spirit of Kundalini Yoga, let us begin with the Adi Mantra, Ong Namo guru dev namo, to bow down and call to the truth, creative wisdom, and divine teacher within each of us.
Kundalini Yoga was shrouded in mystery for many years, which caused fear and mistrust among a wider audience. Untrained people were said to be unable to handle the energy of the snake coiling at the base of the spine.
Kundalini Yoga has become more accessible and is no longer an exclusive club for the elite. Previously, the teachings and philosophies were only passed orally to selected disciples who had proven their discipline and devotion.
Yogi Bhajan, who emigrated from India to the West in the late 1960s, brought the important and frightening teachings of Kundalini Yoga with him.
What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini means “circle” in Sanskrit and is derived from the root kundal. Although there are many misconceptions about Kundalini Yoga practice, most yogis agree that it is the “Yoga of Awareness.”
Kundalini Yoga focuses on expanding the individual’s state of consciousness and connecting with the universal creative consciousness by awakening latent energy in the base of the spine. This energy is then allowed to flow through the seven main chakras aligned along the spine and the crown of the head.
This practice combines spiritual teachings with kriyas and mantras.
Why Practice Kundalini Yoga?
There are many reasons and benefits to attending a Kundalini Class. Let’s begin with four!
This book challenges fears at their root.
The coiled serpent cannot be unlocked if energy is not allowed to flow freely through the first chakra. Kundalini Yoga encourages practitioners to begin where they are and set healthy boundaries in their lives as well as along their chakras to control the powerful snake energy.
It encourages students to examine their unconscious and fears. Carl Jung, a prominent psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and founder of analytic psychology, wrote in The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga that “until the unconscious is made conscious, it will guide your life and call it fate.”
It promotes a sense of wonder and exploration.
According to Kundalini, ignorance is the cause of suffering. Kundalini Yoga encourages students to question preconceived notions and be curious. In practice, the focus is on learning and the individual experience.
Some teachings and exercises are criticized for being vague and lacking in details because they focus on the aspirant’s autonomy and freedom. Kundalini Yoga has a better reputation for being a blueprint for the evolution of consciousness rather than a step-by-step procedure for liberation.
It fosters humility and surrender.
Although often associated with negative connotations for Kundalini students, the ability to surrender is a valuable lesson. The style encourages the expression of one’s truth and the strength to stand by it but also acknowledges the fact that each individual is a part of the collective creative consciousness. The ability to surrender to an infinite whole allows the student to let go of ego and karma and to be humble.
Prioritize inclusion and community.
White is a good choice for experienced practitioners, as Kundalini yoga teachers believe that colors affect consciousness and help the student reflect on the outside world and deepen their internal journey. Kundalini Yoga teachers allow all color combinations to be worn.
Kundalini’s philosophy acknowledges that all things are creative consciousness and that people are the same energy manifesting uniquely. Kundalini Yoga strengthens compassion for each individual and encourages inclusive communication.
Kundalini Yoga, also known as the Yoga of Awareness, invites students and practitioners to confront their fears while unlocking a dormant power at the base of the spine. It encourages individuals to explore and journey what Kundalini Yoga means to them while cultivating a sense of humility and surrender necessary to be a part of a greater whole and inclusive community.
This journey requires awareness in order to avoid danger and choose the path of light. Kundalini Yoga has many benefits, from a strengthened spine and cores to a complete Kundalini awakening. So why not try it today?
